Adak Island, Alaska

Adak in Spring: Where Asia Meets Alaska

Perched near the western end of the Aleutian Islands, Adak Island is one of the most exciting birding destinations in North America. Sitting just a few hundred miles from Asia, the island lies in the path of migrants that occasionally stray east across the Bering Sea. The result is one of the continent’s most reliable locations to encounter rare Eurasian birds alongside a fascinating mix of Alaskan specialties.

Unlike many remote Aleutian islands, Adak also offers an unusual level of access and comfort for birders. A legacy road system from its former naval base allows us to explore tundra wetlands, coastal lagoons, rocky shorelines, and sheltered bays with ease, all while returning each evening to warm housing and home-cooked meals. With five days to explore this remarkable outpost, we’ll search for everything from Asian vagrants and spectacular seabirds to iconic Aleutian breeders — birding quite literally at the edge of North America.
